Superior Energy Efficiency

Building a new home with superior energy saving features shouldn’t cost more- it should just save more.

Maybe it’s our German engineering roots, but we can’t seem to stop improving upon our building process. At Potterhill, we’ve built hundreds of homes with dozens of variations on energy efficient improvements. We are constantly trying to improve the energy efficiency of our homes because it’s the way we would want our own homes built. We pay particular attention to the Return on Investment for every energy upgrade we include in our standard features to make sure that our home buyers are getting the best bang for their buck.

Our homes are built to keep energy costs down, reduce waste during construction and improve indoor air quality. We focus on solid construction, sound use of space and ecological responsibility. In fact, the average new Potterhill home will save the homeowner over $1,900 each year ( = $158 per month!) on energy bills when compared to an existing home. That same Potterhill home will save its owner $1,100 per year when compared to another new home built by another builder! (Source: HERS rating provided by Green NRG, LLC taken on an average 1,800 sq ft home)*.

Green is not a fad. It is a responsible way to build and Potterhill Homes is committed to the cause for the long haul. Some day, all homes will be built to this standard. But, with Potterhill Homes, “some day” is today.

Here are just a few of the standard features we put into our homes to make sure they are the most energy efficient homes available on the market today:

2 x 6 Advanced Framing wall construction

Recommended construction method by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. EPA's EnergyStar Certification program. Allows for a reduction in thermal bridging and an increase in the available room for insulation, resulting in lower energy costs for occupants. The exterior building envelope is the single most important area on which to focus if you want a home with superior energy efficiency like every Potterhill home.

95.5%+ high efficiency furnaces

help lower utility bills. Most builders use an 92% furnace as standard.

Blown cellulous insulation

Made from recycled newspapers, it saves big money on heating and cooling and improves indoor air quality by inhibiting mold growth. Also acts as a draft stopper, and a sound barrier, reducing outside noise in the home and noise between rooms.

Potterhill homes have an R-21 wall insulation value, compared to most other builders R-13 or R-15 insulation values. This equates to $$$ savings each and every month on energy bills.*

Low-e EnergyStar™ Rated windows

minimize the UV that enters the home. They keep heat out during the summer and keep heat in during the winter and also act as a sunscreen for your furniture and upholstery. They meet the stringent EnergyStar™ requirements for a better built window.

Low volatile organic compound (VOC's) paints

Reduce the cancer-causing toxins and other pollutants released by traditional wall paint. Using low VOC paints improves indoor air quality and minimizes the potential health risk.

Programmable thermostats

cycle to automatically adjust the temperature for the most efficient heating and cooling. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, through proper use of pre-programmed settings, a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs.

A Geothermal Heating and cooling system

while not standard, is a popular upgrade. And for good reason.  Geothermal systems use the earth's constant core temperature to heat and cool your home.  The result is an environmentally friendly system that saves you up to 50% on your utility bill if you home is all-electric (with no natural gas available). The upgrade cost adds about $80 a month to your mortgage bill, but the energy savings is usually more than that.  So, the system saves you from day one. Photovoltaic (solar) panels

This optional upgrade can help Potterhill homes achieve Zero Energy Costs. Solar Panels or Photovoltaic Systems are solar cells that capture light energy from the sun and convert it directly into electricity.

In a home that is “Zero Energy Cost”, the actual cost of purchasing energy is offset by the income generated from selling Solar Renewable Energy Credits back to the power company.

At the end of a given year, the homeowner will have paid little or no money toward energy bills.  Potterhill Homes has installed more solar panels than any other local area builder.

Through December 31, 2021 homeowners who install qualified photovoltaic systems are eligible for a 30% federal tax credit.

All Potterhill Homes are ENERGYSTAR® rated**

Potterhill Homes Average HERS rating: 58

A HERS rating is a measure of energy use in a home. A HERS rating of 100 represents the energy use of a home built to the American Standard Energy Code from 2006. A HERS rating of 0 indicates that the building purchases no energy (“Off the Grid” Building). The lower the rating, the more energy efficient the home. Potterhill Homes range from 19 - 70, and we’re continually improving those ratings.

Some day, all homes will be required to have a HERS rating done prior to sale or resale.

LEED Certified new homes

While Potterhill Homes does not certify every new home, we are one of the leading builders in Ohio of homes that achieve LEED Certification. LEED is a nationally recognized green-building certification program run by the US Green Building Council.

Infill locations are considered green because they reuse land and prevent suburban sprawl

Potterhill Homes seeks out communities where we can reuse land and revitalize older communities. These urban developments are pedestrian friendly and close to shopping and other necessities, minimizing pollution caused by transportation. 

Seek out vendors who have taken steps to be environmentally friendly in their manufacturing process.

For example, Potterhill purchases black top from a company that uses a solar-powered plant and our kitchen cabinets come from a company that has earned environmental awards for their manufacturing processes.

Local vendors help reduce emissions produced by transporting materials to the job site

Potterhill Homes seeks out local and regional vendor partners to reduce our impact on the environment and to support local economies.
